“…itchy
feet returned and Alex left his job in Vegas, retrieved his backpack, and hit
the road again, though he found that if you are stupid enough to bury a camera
underground you won’t be taking many pictures with it afterwards…But this is
not important. It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of
living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found. God it’s
great to be alive! Thank you. Thank you,” (37).
---This quote really exemplifies Chris’ interpretation of “the good life.” Rather than marveling at the amazing usages of technology, Chris instead finds enjoyment in great experiences and memories, and living life to its fullest extent. It is important to note the emphasis he puts on “living” in his journal as well. He underlines the word to draw attention to its true meaning, to show its significance within his mindset. It is not simply the continuation of one in his or her life, but instead, once again experiencing great times, establishing joyful and lasting memories, and letting nothing pass one in life. In general, this does a great deal to show Chris’ strong desire to live freely as well. By wanting to get out and truthfully live, it implies that he feels somewhat bottled up in his current life, or at least has in the past, for someone with all the freedom in the world most likely would not have as strong as a desire to live life to the fullest as Chris does.
